Porsche 917 chassis number 004 began its sports career on June 1, 1969 at the 1000 km of the Nürburgring with an honest 8th place on this unfavorable track driven by David Piper and Frank Gardner. For the 1970 season, it was converted to “K” specifications and was acquired by the Gulf team. It was very severely damaged for its first outing under the Brands Hatch deluge and was rebuilt with the reserve chassis 017.

For the 24 hours of Le Mans, Jo Siffert signs the 3rd time during the second practice session conceding only 1 “3 to Vic Elford. The Swiss was given by John Wyer a role in which he excels: that of Siffert took off in a rush, but in the straight line Elford, helped by the best top speed of his 917 “long queue”, took first place and on the first pass he was 3 “ahead. Faster in traffic and in winding parts, Jo Siffert and the Porsche n ° 20 take the lead firmly from the second refueling.
